When I was diagnosed with cancer my world fell apart.
Here I was with a husband and 3 children, one of them only 3 months old, and I’m told I should clear my schedule entirely for “a while” for the tests and treatments. And for the the affects the treatments would have on me.
I searched for anything that would help me.
I decided to help others who were in the same position as I was back then. I can’t give anyone advice of what to do or what not to do. But, I can do some of the searching for you. Can’t say that they will cure, but research shows that certain food may help prevent cancer.
Discover the facts behind reducing your risk of cancer with cancer-fighting foods in this informative and visual guide supported by the latest cancer research.
With more than 700,000 copies sold worldwide, Foods to Fight Cancer explores the link between diet and cancer with information backed by the scientific community. Written by internally recognized experts Richard Béliveau, Ph.D., and Dr. Denis Gingras, you will learn how to eat well to be well and reduce your risk. Updated and expanded to include the latest oncological research, this guide reveals how using simple dietary changes and preventative nutrition with everyday foods that are scientifically proven to contain anticancer properties work in your body to fight and prevent cancer.
With more than 100 charts, tables, and diagrams that clearly explain the facts and science behind nutrition and debunk popular myths surrounding certain foods, Foods to Fight Cancer is an essential book for anyone looking to improve their health, to have a healthy remission, to begin cancer prevention, or to support a loved one going through treatment.

I don’t have to tell you things are bad, We know they’re bad. That our air is unfit to breath, That our food is unfit to eat. I want you to get mad. I want you to get up right now and go to your computer and buy the book because You’re Mad As Hell and you don’t want CANCER anymore. A little from the movie “Network.” I’m part of the group that’s hoping to beat this dreaded disease. So far I believe in this book and Anticancer: A New Way Of Life. If you’re unable to buy them go get them at the library. IMO These are two must reads if you were diagnosed with cancer. GL
One other reviewer thought he/she had listed all the anti-cancer foods mentioned in the book. It turns out that there were many more foods mentioned.
I like this book because it:
1. tells how phytochemicals work to stop cancer. For example, by inducing apoptosis or preventing angiogenesis.
2. it lists specific foods
3. it tells what phytochemicals are in what foods
The third is important because it allows the reader to create a search string that contains the phytochemical’s name, the word “cancer”, and the initials “NIH”. Doing a Google search using the string “kaempferol cancer NIH” will find several scholarly articles such as:
“Kaempferol induces apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells through activating p53 in the intrinsic pathways”.
BTW, kaempferol is found in capers. You find this out by looking at Table 22. The searches will also reveal that there are a couple of spelling typos in the table. Fortunately, Google is more than willing to give you a correct spelling. A Wikipedia search for kaempferol will also find more foods that contain kaempferol.
I got this book a few days ago, my husband was diagnosed with early stage melanoma 3 weeks ago. I wanted to glean healthy foods from it, although I believe I am cooking quite healthy for the family already. What the book does in the beginning is explain cancer from a biological/medical stand point to a lay person. It explains what it is, how cells go wrong to become cancerous, what makes cancer prosper and hard to treat. At first I thought I’d skip over that section, I don’t have a medical or scientific background, and I usually struggle with such explanations as too dry and boring for the lay person.
However, I found myself reading this section with increasing interest as the authors give just the right amount of information to help me get a basic understanding of the cell biology of cancer, and I know this will help me down the road in knowing why I am going the extra mile to include the suggested foods into our daily diet. This understanding will definitely motivate me.
The authors also don’t throw out the conventional approach to treating cancer, but explain quite well why and how diet can do things in treating and preventing cancer on an ongoing basis which drugs and radiation do only for a certain time, with side effects, and possibly not eliminating all of the cancer. The authors see diet as a crucial and scientifically valid ally in fighting cancer.
I haven’t read any chapter about the individual foods yet, just glanced around a bit, but I can say that DK publishing is doing its trademark outstanding job of making books very readable and accessible with excellent layout and design. I’m looking forward to reading more, and there is even a section on “Chocolate: a good obsession.” My husband loves chocolate!

Based on a solid foundation of the healing properties of good nutrition, this book empowers readers with the information they need to make the best choices and to gain control over their total health and well-being – physical, emotional, and spiritual. While addressing the specific needs of those with a diagnosis of cancer, Varona explores the key factors that science and experience have shown to influence the path of prevention and recovery. Grounded in documented research from leading medical institutions – along with studies of the world’s healthiest populations – nutrition educator Verne Varona has developed a breakthrough nutritional and lifestyle programme for immunity building and cancer prevention and recovery. This book provides detailed diet and lifestyle modifications that will reinforce the body’s immunity and reduce cell-damage to an absolute minimum. While the bulk of this book is devoted to physical nutrition, eating the right foods is not the whole picture. No matter what course of treatment a patient may choose, clinical research and anecdotal testimony have shown that those who have embraced a range of self-healing choices not only see a positive impact on their physical and psychological well-being but inevitably enhance their chances of survival. The most influential of these choices are: life purpose; positive attitude; managing stress; sense of humor; love and social support; emotional expression; and faith. Along with good nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, and physical exercise, these choices contribute to a more comprehensive and complete healing.
Verne’s first book, “Nature’s Cancer-Fighting Foods” (revised: May, 2014-Perigee Books), is a sensible, alternative health plan for cancer and many degenerative diseases. Originally printed in 2001 and used as a textbook in a number of academic health and wellness institutions, its newly revised, updated and expanded version boasts a complete literary overhaul, five new chapters and a 40-page opening titled: “10 Essential Keys to Take Control of Your Total Well-Being.” This welcomed revision features prominent endorsements from accomplished individuals and an introduction by physician, author and director of the Prostate Research Cancer Institute, Mark Scholz, MD.

Verne Varona delivers an engaging, thought provoking, hard hitting and humorous, journey through his years of experience working with cancer patients in regards to their nutrition. His personal story informs his life’s work, and we are better for it. I have personally worked with Verne on my own nutritional challenges with fabulous results because of his philosophy.
“First and foremost, this is a book about the healing power of food.”
In this book, he reveals, candidly, what happens in our bodies and why we need to pay attention to what goes in them. With moments of detail, he encapsulates it all by reminding us that we are many parts in this one body.
“Therefore, a one-size-fits-all approach to healing is naively simplistic. It might sound good on paper, but in the real world, your dietary and healing needs are best when individualized.”
“The body does not lie. It is extremely vulnerable to the subtleties of our emotional states.”
Nature’s Cancer Fighting Foods is a book to read and reread. Something new will come from every fresh pair of eyes on this information. From cancer to blood sugar to anger, with some Chinese medicine sprinkles, Verne leaves no stone unturned in this book that is sure to be a classic for years to come.
“Food is the foundation of any healing plan.”

Review of Fight Cancer With Juicing:“The recipes in this book are nice, but if you’re looking for more information than a quick Google search can provide, this is not the book for you. There is no information about how to juice, store the juice, etc. Mostly, this book is a list of foods that can be juiced, and suggestions on how to combine them.
This book contains contradictory information (such as advising the reader to avoid all dairy on one page, then recommending yogurt and eggs as a good source of protein on the following page.) The author of this book lists no degrees, credentials, or even personal experience that seems to qualify him to write a book on this subject.”
“The book is not difficult in read through better to recognize. It really is writter in straightforward terms instead of confusing. I am happy to inform you that this is actually the finest publication i actually have read in my individual daily life and may be he best book for possibly.”
— Valerie Heaney
