My Review of Udemy

At a glance

Udemy is an online learning marketplace for people who want to create and teach various courses. It provides an instructor training course, tools to create the course, and marketing to reach perspective students.

How Udemy works

If you want to teach a course you enroll as an instructor and take the instructor training. After completing the training, the instructor chooses what he/she wants to teach and creates the course using the tools provided by Udemy. The requirements instructors are given are pretty simple: Each course must include 1-3 hours of content and each class lasting a minimum of 30 minutes with 60% video content.

MISSION and PHILOSOPHIES:

Review of Udemy

Mission:
To help anyone learn anything from programming to design to photography to cake decorating and more.

Philosophies:
1) Diversity is more important than consistency. Each student learns differently. Each instructor is empowered to teach differently.

2) Sustainable is more important than free.  You don’t help hundreds of millions of people overnight. You do it slowly, brick by brick, person by person.

3) Opportunity is more important than a guaranteed outcome.  Providing access and opportunity to many is far more impactful than providing guarantees to a few. Empower the self-motivated.

Review of Udemy

Worldwide

Udemy boasts being the world’s largest online learning marketplace of 10 million+ students and 40,000+ courses taught by expert instructors.

They have a large number of team members who manage a wide list of areas including: leadership, marketing, support, engineering, design, instructor, growth, financial, product, and their Human Resources team.

The Good…

  • Teach your own courses, anything you want.
  • Work from home any time of the day.
  • Very large marketing company.
  • They provide marketing for your courses.
  • Wide range of expertise.
  • Instructor training is provided.

… and the Bad

  • If students take your courses as a result of their marketing, they take half of the profits.
  • Instructors have posted complaints that their instructor support is lacking.

Who is Udemy for?

Udemy is certainly not a business that children would use. It is for adults who want to teach online courses on topics of their choice. The course topic opportunities are basically unlimited.

Cost

If you decide to participate in their promotions, you agree that Udemy may offer your courses at a discount of up to 50% off the base price.

Udemy takes 50% of the revenue if the student takes the course as a result of their marketing. Instructors may receive %100 of the  revenue if they get the student to take the course.

The instructor can create as many courses as they wish, and can choose whether it will be offered for free or at a cost. Udemy gives these guidelines:

  • You can set your course price between $20 and $50.  If your default currency is not in dollars, you can see our global price matrix here.
  • You can set your course price within one of 7 tiers between $20 and $50: $20, $25, $30, $35, $40, $45, $50.

My Final Opinion of Udemy

Udemy appears to be a legitimate marketing business. I believe you could successfully offer courses with them. I am not certain that they would provide  much assistance and they appear to be set up to take a good portion of the profits.

Udemy is not my first choice, but I don’t believe they are a scam. I think a much better choice would be with Wealthy Affiliate. I strongly suggest you check them out if you are interested in online work. Their training and support system are extremely high quality. Their costs are low and you get the profit. Here’s a link: Wealthy Affiliate.

  1. Hey! I’m all for generating income from home. I think it’s so important to be your own boss! I’ve been thinking about creating my own course lately and I’m in need of some more research. I will definitely check Udemy out. Thank you for the post!

    1. Kayla, If you want to teach a course, I might recommend trying offering a free one from Udemy first. You can charge for your course if you want as well. Depends on how much time you plan to put into it and if you think you can generate students. They have a lot on their pages, so checking them out is a good idea.
